Anatomy of a Romance Scam

Yulia (if that’s even your real name which I highly doubt),

Here is the truth.

It was clear to me early on that you are not who you pretend to be. Are you not a scammer, who pretends to fall in love with people online in order to trick them into sending money for trips that you never intend to go on? I too, am just shocked.

Tell me, how is your visa application coming along? I’m very intrigued by this. I know that an in-person interview is required at the US Consulate to obtain a visa. The US Consulates in Russia are not even accepting interview appointments at this time according to the official website (https://travel.state.gov/content/travel/en/us-visas/visa-information-resources/wait-times.html). Even if they were, the wait time is typically at least 2 months. Even if you were real, and even if you did intend to go on this trip (which I doubt), there is no way that you could go on such short notice without already possessing a passport and visa.

I even tried to point out the foolishness of such a trip on such short notice, but of course you weren’t interested in meeting later next year. You wanted me to send you money right away. This is why you continued to lie about everything. So, I decided that I too, would lie about sending you money. Why should I be honest with someone who is lying to me and trying to scam me out of money?

You also promised to pay me back once you arrived in Las Vegas. This is also a lie. If you only have $900 and this is all of the money that you have like you claim, how do you expect to make $649 more before the trip in 22 days in order to pay me back? This makes no sense. If you can make $649 in 22 days, why not just wait 22 more days and pay for the trip yourself, and plan the vacation for later next year when you can afford it and have plenty of time to secure all of the necessary documents. Also, were you planning on having no money for the entire month you were in the USA? This also makes no sense. If this was your actual plan, then it’s a very stupid and impossible one. But I don’t think it was your plan at all. I think your plan was to take my money, and then disappear and never speak to me again.

Even if you are really who you claim to be (which I doubt), and even if you did spend all of your money to meet a stranger in a foreign country you met online only 36 days ago, then this was a very foolish thing to do, and the travel agency has scammed you, because there is no possible way that you could make such a trip in such a short period of time without already possessing a valid passport and US Visa.

I think you and the trip, your ‘love’ for me are all made up, just like the transfer numbers I sent you.

It sucks to be scammed, tricked and lied to, doesn’t it? I don’t know how many people you are able to fool, but I will not be one of them this time.

This will make excellent content for my blog. I plan to publish these Emails as an example of how scammers like you operate, so that others can learn how to avoid them. This is what I wanted to achieve.
